In years past, they\u2019ve turned their stage into an aquarium, suspended themselves above arenas in a giant hot dog and appeared to shoot their drummer out of a cannon.\u00a0But somehow, the band delivered as they rang in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>In a pro-shot, nearly half-hour video from their Madison Square Garden set revealed the complex production of Phish\u2019s latest hi jinx. During the third set of the night, guitarist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/trey-anastasio\/\" id=\"auto-tag_trey-anastasio\" data-tag=\"trey-anastasio\">Trey Anastasio<\/a> and bassist Mike Gordon took the stage in space suits. They played \u201cMercury,\u201d a jam that Phish.net <a href=\"https:\/\/phish.net\/song\/mercury\/history\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">calls<\/a> \u201cone of the most ambitious Phish songs debuted since the band returned in 2009\u2013 a multi-part composition with prog-rock influences\u2026\u201d The band brought the song\u2019s lyrics \u2013 \u201cbut the net\u2019s unbreakable \/ so don\u2019t worry about falling\u201d \u2013 to life, with aerial acrobats dangling above them, doing synchronized moves as the band embarked on a spacey jam.<\/p>\n<p>That jam was interrupted by a countdown and balloon drop, which led to the biggest surprise of the night: Gordon and Anastasio taking flight high above the Garden crowd as they played \u201cSay it To Me S.A.N.T.O.S,\u201d a song the band debuted the song on Halloween as they played a special set as a fake Scandinavian band Kasvot V\u00e4xt.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon proved he had no problem with heights as he kicked and danced along to the song; A GoPro camera attached to his bass adds extra intimacy to the video.<\/p>\n<p>Phish don\u2019t play as many shows as they used to, but the performance proved they are still as tight and imaginative as ever.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KXEjX_SVAOQ?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/watch-phish-take-flight-in-wild-new-years-eve-aerial-stunt-774151\/\" target=\"_blank\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phish have to work pretty hard to surprise fans with their annual New Years Eve stunt.
