Founded in 1999, the four-piece would first break the <em>Billboard<\/em> charts with 2002\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/40-greatest-emo-albums-of-all-time-23526\/taking-back-sunday-tell-all-your-friends-2002-160204\/\"><em>Tell All Your Friends<\/em><\/a>, a gut-punching collection of songs like \u201cCute Without the \u2018E\u2019 (Cut From the Team)\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re So Last Summer\u201d \u2014 of which the 2003 video memorably spotlighted a spirited lip-sync by fellow Long Islander and Public Enemy member Flavor Flav. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/taking-back-sunday\/\" id=\"auto-tag_taking-back-sunday\" data-tag=\"taking-back-sunday\">Taking Back Sunday<\/a>\u2019s pop-conscious hooks and knotty, post-hardcore riffs would help provide a blueprint for many other melodic punk and hardcore groups over the next 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are fortunate to be having a 20th\u00a0anniversary,\u201d lead singer Adam Lazzara tells\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. Adds bassist Shaun Cooper: \u201cWe came from a scene where most bands didn\u2019t have much longevity. The four of us really love making music together and playing shows. We always kind of lived in fear that it could all go away at any minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band celebrates two decades under the influence this week with <em>Twenty<\/em>, a compilation of songs that span the band\u2019s illustrious career, set for release January 11th\u00a0via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/craftrecordings.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Craft Recordings<\/a>. The album includes 19 tracks from\u00a0all seven of their full-length albums, plus\u00a0two newly minted studio recordings by the band\u2019s core lineup since 2001 \u2014 comprised of Lazzara and Cooper, plus founding guitarist John Nolan and drummer Mark O\u2019Connell. The new bonus tracks include the blazing 2018 single \u201cAll Ready to Go,\u201d plus the heartrending piano ballad, \u201cA Song for Dan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TElGdN-AMIY?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A sobering reflection on the guilt of surviving a loved one\u2019s death, the sweeping orchestral lament was first kindled by drummer O\u2019Connell, who sought to commemorate the passing of one of his dear friends and bandmates from his youth. \u201cMark and I had a good friend who tragically passed away during the recording of our\u00a0[2016] <em>Tidal Wave<\/em>\u00a0record,\u201d explains Cooper. \u201cHe taught Mark and I a ton about songwriting and guitar playing. After he passed, Mark was inspired and spent about a year working on the musical arrangement of the song.\u201d Disquieting in its vulnerability, Lazarra\u2019s voice quakes fiercely as he sings, \u201cSo many lessons left unlearned\/All those warning signs you missed\u2026\/If I could reach you, I would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a much higher note, Taking Back Sunday capped off their 2018 by becoming the youngest inductees of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.limusichalloffame.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Long Island Music Hall of Fame<\/a>. They are joined by legends such as Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, Joan Jett and their friend Flavor Flav. \u201cPublic Enemy came up one town over from where Mark and I grew up,\u201d says Cooper.\u00a0\u201cKnowing that they came from our neck of the woods was inspiring and gave us hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a smattering of shows in 2018, the quartet kicked off <a href=\"http:\/\/www.takingbacksunday.com\/tour\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">their 2019 world tour<\/a> this month, which will last throughout the year and cover five continents. \u201cOne of the most striking things to me is looking out to the crowd and seeing people of all different ages,\u201d says Lazzara. \u201cTo have people all at different phases of their life getting lost at the same time, in the same place, to the same thing, together.\u00a0We have been fortunate enough to grow up together, over the years.
