On \u201cThis Land,\u201d which he released in its studio form earlier that day, he leaned into the heavier, darker side of his sound \u2013 belting lyrics about modern racism (\u201cParanoid and pissed-off now that I got the money\/50 acres and a model A, right in the middle of Trump country\u201d) over distorted blues riffs and wah-wah fills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He recruited house band Jon Batiste and Stay Human for the lighter \u201cFeed the Babies,\u201d channeling Marvin Gaye with a smooth falsetto over a laid-back, horn-heavy R&amp;B groove.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PDw06_g_jcM?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>This Land<\/em>, due out March 1st, finds Clark spanning his full musical spectrum \u2013 from acoustic country-blues to dub-reggae. \u201cI wanted every note and lyric to mean something,\u201d he told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> in an upcoming feature. \u201cThere was a lot of trial and error, a lot of experimentation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The songwriter also spoke about the real-life inspiration behind \u201cThis Land.\u201d \u201cI think it\u2019s only right at this point in time, if you have a microphone louder than others, to speak out about that anger,\u201d he said. \u201cI haven\u2019t been through shit compared to my people.
