In the last decade, Jack White<\/a>\u2019s Third Man Records<\/a> has expanded from a small Nashville record store to a \u201cRolling Record\u201d truck store, a second Detroit location, a pressing plant and more. \u201cOne day, I want this place to be like what I had heard about Henry Ford wanted for Ford Motor company,\u201d Jack White said last year.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWhich was you pour in raw materials on this side and out the other side of the factory pop out cars.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s getting there. Today, the company announced the opening of Third Man Mastering<\/a> in Detroit, where White\u2019s team of engineers will master recordings \u2013 the final stage of the process that adjusts levels and prepares music to be played all stereos and formats \u2013 for the public. White\u2019s team includes Bill Skibbe, who recorded and mixed White\u2019s album Boarding House Reach<\/em> and has mixed the Dead Weather, the Raconteurs and more, and Warren Defever, a musician who has produced and engineered Iggy and the Stooges, Thurston Moore and more. The spot will also provide services like vinyl lacquer cutting.<\/p>\n

In an era when record stores have shut down at alarming rates, Third Man has found a way to grow using what White has called \u201cancient technology.\u201d\u00a0\u201cI think a lot of people think, oh, you\u2019re a Luddite, or you live in the past, or this is nostalgia or golden-age thinking,\u201d he said last year<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI disagree. I like to take what\u2019s beautiful about what\u2019s already been proven\u2014what works\u2014and ask, how can we marriage that with what\u2019s happening right now? And what can we do with that tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n
