He was 77. The musician\u2019s son, Singh Birdsong, and his ex-wife, Angela Birdsong, confirmed his death on Instagram and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/angelaclarkebirdsong\/posts\/10214850372105959\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>, respectively.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bs8nNsDjr20\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_medium=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\" readability=\"-6.5984848484848\"><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Birdsong was an accomplished solo artist, as well as a prolific session musician and producer who worked with like Stevie Wonder and Roy Ayers. Years later, his music would be sampled by an array of artists, most notably Daft Punk, who tweaked Birdsong\u2019s 1979 cut \u201cCola Bottle Baby\u201d for their 2001 song, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gAjR4_CbPpQ\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHarder, Better, Faster, Stronger\u201d<\/a> (which was later sampled by Kanye West on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PsO6ZnUZI0g\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cStronger\u201d<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Birdsong\u2019s 1980 track \u201cRapper Dapper Snapper\u201d has also been sampled by numerous hip-hop artists. De La Soul first cribbed the cut for their 1989 hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P8-9mY-JACM\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMe Myself and I,\u201d<\/a> while DJ Premier later used it on Gang Starr\u2019s 2003 track, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8KgtGs1ny0k\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSkillz.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The son of a minister, Birdsong got his start in music as a singer in the Los Angeles Community Choir. He later served in Vietnam and spent time playing for service personnel in clubs throughout Germany.
