\u201cThotiana\u201d is a hit. After much disbelief and apprehension, Blueface<\/a> has capitalized on a viral moment that started to gain steam throughout the latter half of 2018. Earlier this week, the track debuted at number 75 on the Billboard<\/em> Hot 100<\/a>, almost a year after the original was released. The Los Angeles rapper dropped the music video for \u201cThotiana\u201d remix featuring YG<\/a>\u00a0to keep the momentum going.<\/p>\n

The humorous Cole Bennett-directed visual is partially based on the rapper\u2019s real life. Johnathan Porter, better known as Blueface<\/a>, was the starting quarterback for the Arleta football team \u2014 Bill Coan told the Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a> that Porter was \u201cvery coachable\u201d and lead the team to a 2014 East Valley League championship. As far as musical mini-biopics go, the video for the \u201cThotiana\u201d remix takes numerous liberties. It\u2019s hard to imagine that Blueface\u2019s high school football coach was screaming, \u201cIt ain\u2019t no fun if the coach can\u2019t have none.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the reasons Blueface \u2014 and by extension \u201cThotiana\u201d \u2014 has become a surging hit is because of its divisiveness. The Cash Money West rapper employs a flow that looks at the beat as a suggestion, instead of something to be followed.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody say I\u2019m offbeat. I wrote that motherfucking song to the beat,\u201d he\u00a0told Genius<\/a> in December. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have had a \u2018Thotiana\u2019 if I didn\u2019t hear the beat first. The first thing that start crack the song was Thotiana. I had that word that was going to be in the song regardless. It was like a puzzle. I had Thotiana. I just had to fill in the blanks.\u201d<\/p>\n
