{"id":481372,"date":"2019-01-25T19:01:49","date_gmt":"2019-01-26T02:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=784957"},"modified":"2019-01-25T19:01:49","modified_gmt":"2019-01-26T02:01:49","slug":"kanye-west-sues-universal-emi-over-record-contracts-song-publishing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/kanye-west-sues-universal-emi-over-record-contracts-song-publishing\/","title":{"rendered":"Kanye West Sues Universal, EMI Over Record Contracts, Song Publishing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/shutterstock_10012822bf.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/kanye-west\/\">Kanye West<\/a> filed a pair of lawsuits Friday against a number of high-profile record companies and music publishers, including Universal Music Group, Roc-A-Fella, Def Jam and the Sony\/ATV-owned EMI Music Publishing.<\/p>\n<p>The heavily redacted lawsuits were filed at Los Angeles Superior Court Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/thr-esq\/kanye-west-sues-emi-his-song-publishing-contract-1179393\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>the Hollywood Reporter<\/em> writes<\/a>. While the exact nature of West\u2019s lawsuits are unclear, it appears West is seeking both unknown monetary damages from the record labels as well as a \u201ctransfer of property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In non-redacted portions, West\u2019s legal team mentions \u201ca dispute between the parties\u2019 rights and obligations to one another under the Recording Agreement and Extensions.\u201d In addition to West\u2019s own work, the lawsuit also mentions songs West produced for Jay-Z\u2019s 2001 LP <em>The Blueprint<\/em>, thus Roc-A-Fella\u2019s inclusion in the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>An UMG spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit. Sony, the parent company of EMI, did not immediately respond to request for comment, nor did West\u2019s representative and lawyer. EMI has handled the publishing rights to West\u2019s music since 2003, before the rapper released his debut <em>The College Dropout<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In West\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/kanye-west-video-rant-mind-control-publishing-737583\/\">\u201cMind Control\u201d nine-minute social media rant<\/a> in October, the rapper was candid about his attempts to reclaim his publishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to go buy my publishing from Sony\/ATV and they said, \u2018It\u2019s $8 million [or] $9 million\u2019 and when I went to buy it, they told me \u2018No,\u2019 I couldn\u2019t buy my publishing,\u201d he said. \u201cI have the money to buy [back] my publishing. And they told me that I couldn\u2019t buy my publishing\u2026. It\u2019s like the control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>West continued, invoking Prince\u2019s own issues with Warner Music, \u201cSony ATV told me I couldn\u2019t buy my publishing [but] I got the money. So Big Jon [Platt], Marty [Bandier]\u2026 whoever is involved\u2026 I need my publishing\u2026 I got the money. I\u2019m not gonna say the \u2018S\u2019 word.
