The album is the third in a trilogy of solo records that began with 2015\u2019s\u00a0<em>Faith in the Future\u00a0<\/em>and continued with 2017\u2019s\u00a0<em>We All The Want Same Things<\/em>, which critics considered to be an artistic breakthrough for Finn.<\/p>\n<p><em>I Need a New War,<\/em> out April 26th,\u00a0was produced by Finn\u2019s longtime collaborator Josh Kaufman and recorded in upstate New York. The first taste of the album is the song \u201cBlankets,\u201d which is also the album\u2019s opening track. The song finds the 47-year-old singer in noir-story mode, describing a troubled relationship with plenty of winking self-references to his beloved hometown. \u201cWhen we got to the Twin Cities,\u201d he sings, \u201cI said, \u2018Man, I know some songs about this place.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThematically, this was the third group of songs that I had written about smaller moments,\u201d Finn said about the album. \u201cPeople trying to stay afloat in modern times, attempting to find connection, achieving tiny triumphs and frustrating let downs in their day to day lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finn recently played the album in full at a January show at Brooklyn\u2019s Murmrr Theatre. Performing with a full band, complete with backup singers and horns, the concert demonstrated expansive new sound textures the singer is experimenting with on his fourth solo record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Hold Steady, the music\u2019s so big that I feel like the lyrics also have to be grand,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-hold-steadys-craig-finn-on-new-solo-lp-songs-about-girls-53414\/\">Finn told\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em> in 2015<\/a>. \u201cSolo records allow me to be a little more vulnerable and maybe a little more persona, maybe a little more mundane.
