On Sunday night, Atlanta rapper 21 Savage<\/a> (real name\u00a0She\u2019yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph)<\/span>\u00a0was arrested and detained<\/a> by ICE, which claims that he is British and illegally overstayed a visa issued in 2005.<\/p>\n

In response, a petition<\/a> from Black Lives Matter has been released, demanding that Abraham-Joseph\u2019s potential deportation be halted. BLM is joined by a coalition of other civil rights organizations, including Undocublack<\/a>, a network of undocumented black people, Color of Change<\/a>, a civil rights advocacy non-profit, and Define American<\/a>, an organization which uses storytelling to attempt to redefine how America understands immigration and citizenship.<\/p>\n

According to the petition, Abraham-Joseph\u2019s arrest and detention are part of a broader trend against black immigrants in America, and seeks to halt his deportation. The full text of the petition is below, and is available to sign here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The hundreds of ICE assaults and detention of Black immigrants is an endemic in the United States, and is too often carried out with the assistance of local law enforcement. On February 3rd in the early afternoon, organizers were alerted to the arrest and detention of rapper, father, community activist and friend She\u2019yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph -21 Savage. The circumstances of Mr. Abraham-Joseph\u2019s detention stand as a testament to the consistent and historically under-reported harassment and targeting of Black immigrants. The US\u2019 violent history of criminalizing Blackness intersects with its deadly legacy of detaining and deporting Black and Brown immigrants. This needs to stop today!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

There are around 4.2 Million Black immigrants in the U.S. \u2013 619,000 are undocumented. Mr. Abraham-Joseph has been in the United States since he was a young child. Atlanta is his home. He has no current or prior criminal convictions and he is beloved by his friends, fans and family. It is shameful that he and so many Black immigrants are separated from their families on a daily basis as part of the US\u2019s heartless and racist immigration policies.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
