“Sometimes you need to get knocked the fuck out just to remember what it felt like to be standing on your own two feet<\/em>” – Cody Carson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The metaphor of a phoenix rising from the ashes is overdone. It’s played out, and it’s been said so often that the words lose meaning. But that’s the best way to describe\u00a0Set It Off<\/strong>\u00a0right now.<\/p>\n

Not even two weeks have passed since Set It Off released their new album ‘Midnight’, but it’s already breaking their own records. Within two days of release, ‘Midnight’ had been streamed over 1 million times on Spotify. Right now it’s number one album in the Current Alternative Chart, and number two on the Current Rock Chart on Billboard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Basically, ‘Midnight’ has been big for Set It Off. They’re on top of the world. But like a phoenix, they’ve had to rise from some metaphorical ashes.<\/p>\n

Set It Off frontman Cody Carson spoke to us for the current issue of Rock Sound, and opened up about the circumstances that led to ‘Midnight’, which looks to be their biggest album yet.<\/p>\n

\u201c[November 2017] was the hardest month I\u2019ve had in a long time,\u201d<\/em> Cody shared. \u201cIt was the first time that the people we were working with told us they didn\u2019t want us anymore. I fell into a deep depression, even to the point that I broke down in the middle of a grocery store. I felt abandoned. When you work hard on something that you love, all you want to do is feel appreciated and respected. We suddenly felt neither.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He continued \u201cIt was so important for us to feel that low. Sometimes you need to get knocked the fuck out just to remember what it felt like to be standing on your own two feet. A lot of people, when they get knocked down like that, take that as a sign that they should stop what they are doing or that they aren\u2019t good enough. I take it as the opposite. You can push through this and get to the other side. That\u2019s why they call it getting through something.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And they absolutely did get through it. They were picked up by Fearless Records in July 2018, and the rest is history (in the making).<\/p>\n

\u201cI want Set It Off to be a home, not a hotel,\u201d<\/em> Cody concluded. \u201cThere is so much going on in the world that it\u2019s easy to get lost in all of the negativity and hopefully we can be that bit of audio positivity when people need it. As long as we\u2019re going into this with our hearts in the right place, there\u2019s no way that we can fail.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
