15 years from the original idea, through to a full Netflix series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While the world is going crazy for the Netflix adaptation of Gerard Way<\/strong>‘s comic book The Umbrella Academy, we’re going back in time 15 years to where it all started.<\/p>\n

Our first look at what ended up being The Umbrella Academy was back in 2004, in the\u00a0My Chemical Romance<\/strong>\u00a0documentary Life On The Murder Scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chatting about his illustrating and passion for comic books on the My Chemical Romance tour bus, Gerard shared \u201cI\u2019m working on a comic. It\u2019s about superheroes because I\u2019ve never done superheroes before…”<\/em><\/p>\n

He then goes on to describe his original idea for what became The Umbrella Academy, and the character of Klaus “It\u2019s kind of like X-Men\u2026 This one I\u2019m working on is called The S\u00e9ance- and he\u2019s a guy who uses a ouija board to contact dead superheroes. And they get his powers when they possess him.”<\/em><\/p>\n

He also describes his formation of the character Luther, who ended up being known as Spaceboy (Number One) in the comic book:\u00a0\u201cAnd I\u2019ve got this guy called- I think I\u2019m gonna call him The Darwinist or something\u2026 Or Dr Darwin. And he\u2019s a guy who got into an accident and they had to put his head on the body of a gorilla. And he has to wear this apparatus to keep himself alive- kind of like an iron lung. But he gets all of the abilities of a super-human gorilla.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He’s also asked about whether he has an outlet to publish his comic books, to which he replied \u201cNo, but I\u2019m sure it wouldn\u2019t be hard now. Even though I was shit on in the comic industry for years, I\u2019m sure I wouldn\u2019t have trouble getting one out now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, how times have changed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
