He was 77. Tork\u2019s sister, Anne Thorkelson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/obituaries\/peter-tork-endearingly-offbeat-bassist-and-singer-in-the-monkees-dies-at-77\/2019\/02\/21\/479cf4ae-35ee-11e9-854a-7a14d7fec96a_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">confirmed the affable musician\u2019s death<\/a> to\u00a0<em>The Washington Post.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Tork played a lovable dimwit on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-monkees\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-monkees\" data-tag=\"the-monkees\">the Monkees<\/a><\/em> TV show, but in real life, he was an accomplished songwriter and performer that played on many of their key recordings and wrote several songs for the group, including \u201cCan You Dig It?\u201d and \u201cFor Pete\u2019s Sake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He was diagnosed with the rare tongue cancer adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2009, but he made a full recovery and was back on the road with the Monkees in 2012 and gigged with them through 2016 when he was sidelined for reasons that he never explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhile it is true that my health has required a little more attention these days, I\u2019m feeling pretty good,\u201d Tork wrote on Facebook in October. \u201cI\u2019m also cherishing this time with family and friends, and making music. Keep your eyes open for some possible web concerts with friends and other musicians; we\u2019ll see what comes down the pipeline. As for the rest, thanks for your good wishes.
