The songwriter cranked out distorted blues-rock riffs and leads while bandmate King Zapata anchored the song with his howling slide fills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The quintet moved into a psychedelic vibe during the instrumental bridge with Zapata\u2019s spacey guitar slides and Jon Deas\u2019 squealing synthesizers. Clark ended the final chorus in a smooth falsetto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhat About Us\u201d highlights the guitarist\u2019s recently issued third LP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/gary-clark-jr-this-land-review-799001\/\"><em>This Land<\/em><\/a>, which also includes the title track \u2014 the cut Clark described to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/gary-clark-jr-new-album-racism-donald-glover-789997\/\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> as \u201cthe most important song\u201d he\u2019s ever written. \u201cIt\u2019s about being black in America, in the South,\u201d he said. Clark also noted that he wanted the record to showcase his talents outside the blues, leading him to venture into reggae and soul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI wanted every note and lyric to mean something,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/gary-clark-jr-this-land-racism-america-trump-777000\/\">told <em>RS<\/em><\/a> of the material. \u201cWith the records I\u2019ve made before, there\u2019s so much emphasis on guitar: We\u2019ll just play a badass guitar solo, and no one cares about the lyrics. That\u2019s not what I got into it for. I like Quincy Jones. I like Stevie Wonder. I like Ray Charles. I like Cab Calloway\u2019s arrangements. I like bridges, pre-choruses.
