The best song on the 2 Chainz\u2019s<\/a> Rap or Go to the League<\/em><\/a> isn\u2019t the album\u2019s flashiest. \u201cMoney In The Way\u201d doesn\u2019t have any features or super producers, which the album has in spades. LeBron James, the project\u2019s A&R,<\/a> doesn\u2019t extend his media beef with the Lakers\u2019 young core on wax or claim Klutch Sports is taking over for the \u201999 and 2000.<\/p>\n

Instead, \u201cMoney In The Way\u201d soars because it brings 2 Chainz\u2019s best qualities \u2014 propulsive flow, deceptively complex punchlines and hilarious lyrics \u2014 to the forefront. The Buddah Bless and Jabz beat is built on a simple loop of The Three Degrees<\/a>\u2018 \u201cCan\u2019t You See What You\u2019re Doing to Me\u201d<\/a> and, even with the cinematic horn sample, the production remains open enough to thrust Chainz\u2019s bars to the forefront. There are lyrical non-sequiturs (\u201cPut her on the saddle with a paddle and an Adderall) and nonsensical flexing (\u201cRockin\u2019 reptile, talkin\u2019 alligate’\u201d). During the first verse, 2 Chainz goes on a tear rhyming the words: tummy tuck, double up, double cup, the letter \u201cW,\u201d phobia and coroner. It\u2019s a masterclass from a veteran in his pocket.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoney In The Way\u201d succeeds precisely because it it isn\u2019t chasing grandiosity. The Ariana Grande, Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar features are nice, but Rap or Go to the League<\/em> is at its absolute best when everyone gets out of the way and lets Chainz be Chainz.<\/p>\n
