{"id":482912,"date":"2019-03-02T07:03:31","date_gmt":"2019-03-02T14:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=801955"},"modified":"2019-03-02T07:03:31","modified_gmt":"2019-03-02T14:03:31","slug":"stephan-ellis-survivors-eye-of-the-tiger-bassist-dead-at-69","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/stephan-ellis-survivors-eye-of-the-tiger-bassist-dead-at-69\/","title":{"rendered":"Stephan Ellis, Survivor\u2019s \u2018Eye of the Tiger\u2019 Bassist, Dead at 69"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/GettyImages-85843241.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Stephan Ellis, the former bassist for the quintessential Eighties arena rock outfit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/survivor\/\" id=\"auto-tag_survivor\" data-tag=\"survivor\">Survivor<\/a>, has died at the age of 69.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Survivor\u2019s longtime guitarist, Frankie Sullivan, confirmed Ellis\u2019 death on the band\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/survivortheband\/posts\/2113475828747086\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>. No cause of death was revealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are devastated to hear that Stephan Ellis has passed away,\u201d Sullivan wrote. \u201cSteph was the guy who was only interested in the music. He absolutely had a special charm with the fans and within the band. I loved much when it came to Steph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Survivor formed in 1978, but Ellis didn\u2019t join the band until the early Eighties. The bassist arrived in time to help the group record their 1981 album, <em>Premonition<\/em>, which featured their first Top 40 hit, \u201cPoor Man\u2019s Son.\u201d One year later, Sylvester Stallone approached Survivor to record a song for <em>Rocky III<\/em>, resulting in the band\u2019s signature smash, \u201cEye of the Tiger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cEye of the Tiger\u201d topped the <em>Billboard<\/em> Hot 100 for six weeks, while the band\u2019s 1982 LP of the same name peaked at Number Two on the albums chart. The track won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group and was even nominated for Best Original Song at the 1982 Oscars.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/btPJPFnesV4?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ellis continued to record and perform with Survivor throughout their prolific Eighties heyday. Between 1983 and 1987 \u2013 when Ellis was forced to leave the group for medical reasons \u2013 Survivor released three more albums and notched a string of Top 10 hits including \u201cHigh On You,\u201d \u201cThe Search Is Over,\u201d \u201cIs This Love\u201d and \u201cBurning Heart.\u201d The latter \u2013 off the <em>Rocky IV<\/em> soundtrack \u2013 became the band\u2019s second biggest hit, peaking at Number Two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In his post, Sullivan recalled working with Ellis during this period, specifically the track, \u201cKeep It Right Here.\u201d \u201cThe bass part and lines in the intro just folded into the mix and it was the bass part that inspired me to reach higher on my guitar,\u201d Sullivan remembered. \u201cWe cut our tracks together, live in the studio. Steph\u2019s runs on the neck of that blue bass are as memorable as the song itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Survivor singer Dave Bickler, who sang on \u201cEye of the Tiger,\u201d added <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davebickler\/status\/1101297374427836417\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">on Twitter<\/a>, \u201cJust heard the sad news that Stephan Ellis has passed away! A great musician and a great band mate! One of a kind!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After leaving Survivor, Ellis and the band\u2019s ex drummer, Marc Droubay, formed a group with guitarist Rod McClure called Club M.E.D. that released an album, <em>Sampler<\/em>, in 1990. In the mid-Nineties, Ellis and Droubay rejoined the group, though the bassist left again in 1999. Over the next few decades, Ellis would periodically play a few shows with Survivor, but otherwise remained busy with other projects.
