White will contribute $10,000, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/wayne\/2019\/03\/04\/jack-white-hamtramck-stadium-restoration\/3055137002\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the <em>Detroit Free Press<\/em> reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The money will be used toward restoring the site \u201cfor baseball and soccer games in advance of a planned restoration of its historic grandstand.\u201d The ballpark\u2019s existing grandstand \u2013 which witnessed Hall of Famers like Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige and Detroit Stars\u2019 Norman \u201cTurkey\u201d Stearns take the field \u2013 has been unused since the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamtramck Stadium is one of just five remaining locations where major Negro League teams once played their home games and represents a historic period in the Detroit community,\u201d Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium founder Gary Gillette said in <a href=\"https:\/\/hamtramckstadium.blogspot.com\/2019\/03\/jack-white-to-help-restore-hamtramck-stadium.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ef4ettD-4iw?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe history of Detroit cannot be told without including the history of African-Americans and the history of Detroit\u2019s black community is not complete without the history of the Negro Leagues and the Detroit Stars. Norman \u2018Turkey\u2019 Stearnes and his teammates fought against segregation and discrimination both on and off the field, leaving a legacy we can help preserve by restoring Hamtramck Stadium as a community gathering place and a venue for youth sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White, himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/jack-whites-bat-inducted-into-baseball-hall-of-fame-699380\/\">enshrined in Cooperstown<\/a>, donated \u2013 anonymously, until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/detroit-city\/2017\/12\/09\/jack-white-detroit-investments\/108479262\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the <em>Detroit News<\/em> discovered<\/a> his involvement \u2013 $170,000 to help restore the Detroit park where he played baseball in his youth.
