Mavis Staples<\/a> has announced details of We Get By<\/em>, her new studio album produced by Ben Harper<\/a>. Following her acclaimed 2017 collection If All I Was Was Black, <\/em>the album marks the latest in a flurry of creativity from Staples, who will turn 80 this summer.<\/p>\n

We Get By<\/em> is an album of originals written by Harper for the legendary gospel\/r&b singer and songwriter. The album\u2019s lead single, \u201cChange,\u201d finds the singer addressing gun violence and civil rights. \u201cWhat good is freedom,\u201d she sings over a blues guitar dirge, \u201cif we haven\u2019t learned to be free.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese songs are delivering such a strong message,\u201d the legendary singer-activist says of the new album. \u201cWe truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staples and Harper have collaborated before in recent years. The young singer-songwriter wrote \u201cLove and Trust\u201d for Staples on her 2016 album Livin\u2019 on a High Note<\/em>. Earlier this year, she told Rolling Stone<\/em> that Harper has inspired her to try skateboarding for her 80th birthday. \u201cI\u2019ve seen my friend Ben Harper skateboarding and I said, \u2018Ben, I\u2019m scared for you on that,\u2019 she said,<\/a> \u201cAnd he said, \u2018Well Mavis, this is beautiful. You\u2019ve got to try it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

We Get By <\/em>will hit stores May 10th, in the midst of a series of star-studded 80th birthday celebration concerts<\/a> Staples will be hosting in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville. Of the shows, Staples says, \u201cI am letting my fans know that I\u2019m over the hill, but now I\u2019m going over the mountain.\u201d<\/p>\n
