The album is the follow-up to 2017\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-morrissey-alt-rocks-greatest-stand-up-still-has-it-on-album-number-11-122955\/\"><em>Low in High School.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Their cover of \u201cMorning Starship,\u201d stays fairly faithful to the glam rocker\u2019s 1973 original, with added ethereal harmonized touches where Morrissey and Droste\u2019s voices pleasingly intermingle, some dramatic vocal flourishes and a bit of a psychedelic sway that buoy Morrissey\u2019s hallmark baritone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMorning Starship\u201d follows the release of the LP\u2019s first single, which is Morrissey\u2019s take on Roy Orbison\u2019s 1964 tune, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/morrissey-cover-roy-orbison-its-over-800257\/\">It\u2019s Over<\/a>.\u201d <em>California Son<\/em> will also feature Morrissey\u2019s versions of songs by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Dionne Warwick and Carly Simon, among others. In addition to Droste\u2019s contributions, guest appearances include Green Day\u2019s Billie Joe Armstrong, Broken Social Scene\u2019s Ariel Engle and Petra Haden.<\/p>\n<p><em>California Son<\/em> will be released on May 24th via \u00c9tienne Records\/BMG. Preceding its release, the singer will appear at New York City\u2019s Lunt-Fontanne Theater for his first Broadway residency. During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/morrissey-broadway-residency-new-york-city-802631\/\">seven-day residency<\/a>, Morrissey will perform a career-spanning set, which will include songs from <em>California Son<\/em>.
