{"id":484076,"date":"2019-03-29T23:46:59","date_gmt":"2019-03-30T05:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=812723"},"modified":"2019-03-29T23:46:59","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T05:46:59","slug":"the-zombies-celebrate-sixties-hits-during-triumphant-rock-hall-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/the-zombies-celebrate-sixties-hits-during-triumphant-rock-hall-performance\/","title":{"rendered":"The Zombies Celebrate Sixties Hits During Triumphant Rock Hall Performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/the-zombies-performance.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span>The Zombies revisited their idiosyncratic psych-pop at the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame\" data-tag=\"rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame\">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a> <span>induction ceremony on Friday night.&nbsp;<\/span>The surviving members of the Zombies\u2019&nbsp;<em>Oddessey and Oracle<\/em> lineup reunited after giving speeches for a rousing performance, which leaned heavily on songs from that landmark 1968 album.<\/p>\n<p>Singer Colin Blunstone, keyboardist Rod Argent, bassist Chris White and drummer Hugh Grundy clapped and sighed as they kicked things off with \u201cTime of the Season.\u201d They didn\u2019t miss a beat, a \u201cWho\u2019s your daddy?\u201d or an extended keyboard solo as the stage swirled with psychedelic colors and images of the band in the Sixties were projected behind them. Blunstone held out his arms as he sang the song\u2019s chorus.<\/p>\n<p>They slowed things down next with gently swaggering \u201cThis Will Be Our Year,\u201d with help from a four-part horn section. Next up was the sweetly lilting \u201cTell Her No,\u201d from their self-titled 1964 debut LP. Blunstone smiled and held his arm out as he sang, \u201cher love belongs to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the last song, they played what Argent told the crowd was \u201cjust about the first song I wrote,\u201d their first single, 1964\u2019s \u201cShe\u2019s Not There.\u201d As Argent played the song\u2019s organ solo, the people in the front rows on the floor \u2014 the highest priced tables \u2014 all got up to show their affection. For the song\u2019s last notes, the musicians each stood up and stretched out their arms in victory.<\/p>\n<p><span>The Zombies\u2019 Rock Hall entrance has been a long time coming: The group was first eligible for induction in 1989. They appeared on their first ballot in 2014 and were voted in after their fourth nomination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Zombies\u2019 long wait is not out of character \u2014 it has always taken their music time to sink in. \u201cI remember when we played our first single [\u2018She\u2019s Not There\u2019] to the record company, they didn\u2019t think it was commercial,\u201d keyboardist Rod Argent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/zombies-colin-blunstone-rod-argent-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-interview-768457\/\">told<\/a><\/span> <em><span>Rolling Stone.<\/span><\/em> <span>\u201c\u2026 Certainly nobody thought \u2018Time of the Season\u2019 [which eventually reached Number Three on the Hot 100] was terribly commercial.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRod will always say that<\/span> <em><span>Odessey and Oracle<\/span><\/em> <span>got some good reviews at the time, and it probably did, but overall it didn\u2019t get a great reaction, and certainly not commercially,\u201d lead singer Colin Blunstone added. \u201cIt\u2019s always intrigued me that over a period of time, with nobody promoting the album, no one marketing it, people\u2019s attitudes towards the album changed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Zombies\u2019 Rock Hall induction ceremony falls on an auspicious date for the group. March 29 is \u201cto the day \u2014 50 years after \u2018Time of the Season\u2019 became Number One on<\/span> <em><span>Cashbox<\/span><\/em><span>,\u201d Argent said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen I was a kid, Elvis [Presley] seemed like someone from another galaxy,\u201d Argent continued. \u201cAmerican culture and American music of that sort seemed so far away from anything that I could aspire to at that moment.
