Beyonc\u00e9 praised the grace, brilliance and hard work of Michelle Obama<\/a>, saying the former First Lady \u201cinspires all of us to do better and to be better\u201d in a short essay for Time<\/em><\/a>\u2018s annual \u201c100 Most Influential People\u201d issue.<\/p>\n

At the start of the essay, Beyonc\u00e9 recalled meeting Obama on the eve of Barack Obama\u2019s first inauguration, remembering how she was \u201cembraced by a warm, regal, confident woman who possessed a reassuring calm.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLoving Michelle Obama wasn\u2019t much of a choice,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 said. \u201cIt was something that came naturally, because of how she carried herself. Because she resembled us and was moving in spaces where, as black Americans, we weren\u2019t exactly meant to be, she seemed so powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Beyonc\u00e9, Obama projected a potent kind of familiarity \u2014 \u201cThe way she looked, walked and spoke, in that warm but authoritative tone, we saw our mothers and sisters\u201d \u2014 while the pop star also noted her ability to be strong, ambitious and forthright \u201cwithout sacrificing honesty or empathy.\u201d Citing Obama\u2019s Reach Higher initiative, which promotes continuing education past high school, Beyonc\u00e9 said, \u201cShe empowers all of us to interrogate our fears and surpass greatness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m honored to know such a brilliant black woman who\u2019s spoken about the sacrifice it takes to balance her passions while remaining a supportive partner and mother, and now a best-selling author with Becoming<\/em>,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 continued. \u201cShe has continued to open herself up, even if it meant being criticized. She has continued to be a portrait of grace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9 and her husband, Jay-Z, have been longtime supporters of the Obamas, especially during President Obama\u2019s 2012<\/a> reelection<\/a> campaign<\/a> (Beyonc\u00e9 even sang the National Anthem<\/a> at his second inauguration). The Obamas, in turn, have been vocal fans of the two musicians, placing their songs on various public<\/a> playlists<\/a>. Last July, Michelle Obama was even spotted dancing<\/a> with Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, at a Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z show in Paris, France.<\/p>\n

Along with publishing her essay on Obama today, Beyonc\u00e9 also released a new live album, Homecoming<\/em><\/a>, to coincide with her new Netflix concert film.<\/p>\n
