Janelle Mon\u00e1e doesn\u2019t do cover songs that often. \u201cI\u2019m very selective about the cover songs that I choose and they mean so much to me,\u201d she said on Spotify\u2019s Under Cover podcast<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s really difficult because I spend so much time crying to them or dancing to them that I don\u2019t remember the words. I just want to listen to it over and over again and I will not accept my voice over that artist\u2019s voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mon\u00e1e originally had her heart set on Migos\u2019 \u201cStir Fry\u201d when she agreed to partake in Spotify<\/a>\u2019s Singles Series. \u201cI was gonna do this real like, funky version of it,\u201d she said. But then Mon\u00e1e went to Jamaica, where she heard \u201cHigh Tide or Low Tide,\u201d by Bob Marley<\/a> and the Wailers. \u201cWhen I heard it, it touched my heart,\u201d she recalled. \u201cThis man wrote this song decades ago, but it\u2019s still so relevant. I teleport every time I hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mon\u00e1e first got into Bob Marley because of her musical hero, Lauryn Hill<\/a>. \u201cI was and I still am extremely obsessed with her,\u201d she said. After hearing Hill\u2019s version of \u201cTurn Your Lights Down Low,\u201d she delved into Marley\u2019s entire catalogue. \u201cCatch a Fire<\/em> is one of my favorite albums,\u201d she said. \u201cI heard it for the first time when I was in Jamaica. I was in Montego Bay, and I heard it and I cried. I was so moved, I could not understand how he was able to capture exactly how I want someone to treat me, exactly how I want to treat somebody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHigh Tide or Low Tide\u201d inspires Mon\u00e1e to be a more loving person. \u201cI wanna be more kind, I wanna be more accepting, I wanna be more forgiving,\u201d she asserted. \u201cI want friends who are there for me during those high tides or low tides, all the ups and downs or highs and lows of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
