Ska fans, rejoice! Los Angeles City Council has announced that this May 29th will be forever known as \u201cThe Specials<\/a> Day\u201d in honor of the U.K. band the Specials.<\/p>\n

Formed in Britain in the late 1970s, the Specials gained fame for their signature blend of punk, reggae and anti-racist politics, as heard on their classic 1981 single \u201cGhost Town.\u201d<\/a> Their music has gone on to influence everyone from Sublime to Gorillaz. Last year, they reunited for Encore<\/em><\/a>, their first album in decades. \u201cNow, with racist nationalism on the rise amidst the Brexit debacle, the Specials\u2019 third album \u2014 38 years since the last one, More Specials<\/em> \u2014 is well timed,\u201d Will Hermes wrote in his Rolling Stone<\/em> review. \u201cAs frontman Terry Hall puts it, the band remain \u2018horribly relevant.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, who introduced the resolution honoring the band, said that the Specials have a longtime fanbase in L.A., and a deep connection with its culture: \u201cThe Specials\u2019 legacy is emblematic of the strength derived from our diversity here in Los Angeles. Their music is an example that embracing our differences and uniqueness makes us more powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n
