Los Angeles City Council has announced that this May 29th will be forever known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-specials\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-specials\" data-tag=\"the-specials\">The Specials<\/a> Day\u201d in honor of the U.K. band the Specials.<\/p>\n<p>Formed in Britain in the late 1970s, the Specials gained fame for their signature blend of punk, reggae and anti-racist politics, as heard on their classic 1981 single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RZ2oXzrnti4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cGhost Town.\u201d<\/a> Their music has gone on to influence everyone from Sublime to Gorillaz. Last year, they reunited for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-british-ska-punk-legends-the-specials-return-in-top-form-on-encore-787642\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Encore<\/em><\/a>, their first album in decades. \u201cNow, with racist nationalism on the rise amidst the Brexit debacle, the Specials\u2019 third album \u2014 38 years since the last one, <em>More Specials<\/em> \u2014 is well timed,\u201d Will Hermes wrote in his&nbsp;<em>Rolling Stone<\/em> review. \u201cAs frontman Terry Hall puts it, the band remain \u2018horribly relevant.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, who introduced the resolution honoring the band, said that the Specials have a longtime fanbase in L.A., and a deep connection with its culture: \u201cThe Specials\u2019 legacy is emblematic of the strength derived from our diversity here in Los Angeles.
