The Eminem<\/a>-inspired use of the word \u201cstan\u201d<\/a> to describe hyper-devoted fans has been added to Merriam-Webster\u2019s dictionary.<\/p>\n

The casual use of \u201cstan\u201d famously comes from Eminem and Dido\u2019s hit 2000 song<\/a> of the same name, in which the rapper weaves a harrowing yarn about an obsessive fan trying to get his attention. Nas helped spread the term, rhyming in his 2001 diss track against Jay-Z \u201cEther,\u201d \u201cYou a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a Stan.\u201d \u201cHis is the first recorded usage of \u2018stan\u2019 as a label (and a pejorative one) for an obsessive fan rather than the name of the fan himself,\u201d as The Outline noted<\/a> in 2017. Over the years, \u201cstan\u201d has morphed into a go-to slang term for diehard fans and was added to the Oxford English Dictionary<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n

Merriam-Webster have now entered the word into their dictionary as both a noun and a verb. As a noun, \u201cstan\u201d is defined as \u201can extremely or excessively enthusiastic and devoted fan,\u201d while as a verb it\u2019s defined as \u201cto exhibit fandom to an extreme excessive degree.\u201d<\/p>\n

As an example of how the word can be used, Merriam-Webster\u2019s even plucked a line from a piece<\/a> written by Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s Alan Sepinwall: \u201cOn the drama side, Game of Thrones<\/em> returns after its own year off, but for an abbreviated season that even the most die-hard Westeros stans<\/em> seemed lukewarm about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStan\u201d was one of 640 new words added to Merriam-Webster\u2019s dictionary this month. Other new entries include \u201cEGOT\u201d<\/a> (\u201cthe accomplishment of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award in one\u2019s lifetime\u201d), \u201con-brand\u201d<\/a> (\u201cappropriate to, typical of, consistent with, or supportive of a particular brand or public image or identity\u201d) and \u201cswole\u201d<\/a> (\u201cextremely muscular\u201d)<\/p>\n
