{"id":485034,"date":"2019-04-24T09:22:03","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T15:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=826567"},"modified":"2019-04-24T09:22:03","modified_gmt":"2019-04-24T15:22:03","slug":"michael-jackson-musical-back-on-track-as-creators-wrestle-with-bigger-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/michael-jackson-musical-back-on-track-as-creators-wrestle-with-bigger-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Jackson Musical Back on Track as Creators Wrestle With Bigger Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/GettyImages-1084446446.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The creators of the in-the-works <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/michael-jackson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_michael-jackson\" data-tag=\"michael-jackson\">Michael Jackson<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/broadway\/\" id=\"auto-tag_broadway\" data-tag=\"broadway\">Broadway<\/a> musical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/michael-jackson-musical-coming-to-broadway-666072\/\"><em>Don\u2019t Stop \u2018Til You Get Enough<\/em><\/a> have defended their decision to remain with the production in the aftermath of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/leaving-neverland\/\" id=\"auto-tag_leaving-neverland\" data-tag=\"leaving-neverland\">Leaving Neverland<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/23\/theater\/michael-jackson-musical-lynn-nottage.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with the <em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>, Pulitzer-winning playwright Lynn Nottage and director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon admitted that while they are troubled by the child molestation accusations against Jackson, \u201cWe\u2019re not judge and jury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFolks have to remember we\u2019re theater artists that are examining the life of this very complicated artist. We can ask certain questions, but our job is not to answer those questions,\u201d Nottage said.<\/p>\n<p>Nottage \u2013 who drew the ire of Jackson fans when she said of James Safechuck and Wade Robson, the subjects of <em>Leaving Neverland<\/em>, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-6938639\/BAZ-BAMIGBOYE-New-Michael-Jackson-musical-wont-hide-immensely-flawed-human.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">I think they were telling the truth<\/a>\u201d \u2013 reiterated that their accusations seem \u201cvery believable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I believe [Jackson] was a pedophile? I don\u2019t know that I can say one way or the other,\u201d Nottage told the <em>Times<\/em>. \u201cI don\u2019t think any of us can say with absolute certainty, because we\u2019ve been presented with some information, but Michael Jackson is dead, he\u2019s not in a position to defend himself. It does hurt my heart to think about the possibility that it could be true, and I pray that it isn\u2019t true, and that\u2019s all I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wheeldon added, \u201cThe recent documentary is very believable, but our position in making this show is that we\u2019re trying to make a show that\u2019s balanced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Jackson estate didn\u2019t restrict Nottage and Wheeldon during the creation of the show, and while the jukebox musical might touch on some of the \u201cproblematic\u201d aspects of Jackson\u2019s career, \u201cthe primary focus of our show has always been focusing on Michael\u2019s creative process,\u201d Wheeldon said.<\/p>\n<p>Originally scheduled to debut on Broadway in the fall of 2019, the arrival of <em>Don\u2019t Stop \u2018Til You Get Enough<\/em> was delayed after its Chicago preview run was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/michael-jackson-estate-musical-broadway-794887\/\">canceled<\/a> by the Jackson estate ostensibly due to a month-long actors strike in February; the cancellation coincided with the then-impending broadcast of <em>Leaving Neverland<\/em>.
