{"id":485252,"date":"2019-04-30T06:00:52","date_gmt":"2019-04-30T12:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=828975"},"modified":"2019-04-30T06:00:52","modified_gmt":"2019-04-30T12:00:52","slug":"hear-violent-femmes-new-song-with-televisions-tom-verlaine-hotel-last-resort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/hear-violent-femmes-new-song-with-televisions-tom-verlaine-hotel-last-resort\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Violent Femmes\u2019 New Song With Television\u2019s Tom Verlaine, \u2018Hotel Last Resort\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/violentfemmes_2019.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/violent-femmes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_violent-femmes\" data-tag=\"violent-femmes\">Violent Femmes<\/a> recruited iconic Television guitarist Tom Verlaine for their surreal new song \u201cHotel Last Resort.\u201d The five-minute track appears on the folk-punk band\u2019s 10th LP of the same name, out July 26th via PIAS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Throughout the winding cut, guitarist Gordon Gano unfurls a series of intriguing lyrical vignettes (\u201cI don\u2019t change the chords anymore\/The chords change themselves\u201d; \u201cI\u2019ve become invisible because one is not divisible\u201d) over droning acoustic strums and Verlaine\u2019s textural lead lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bassist Brian Ritchie \u2014 who first met Verlaine while working as a rock journalist during Television\u2019s final tour in 1978 \u2014 initiated the collaboration and heard back with a \u201cyes\u201d within minutes. \u201cWe didn\u2019t really give him much instruction, but he did exactly what we hoped he\u2019d do,\u201d Ritchie said in a statement of Verlaine\u2019s part. \u201cHe clearly has an affinity for the song. He must\u2019ve really clued in on the lyrics, and he really interpreted them with a guitar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gano added, \u201cOne of the greatest thrills of a long recording career is getting Tom Verlaine to play on one of our songs. It\u2019s just amazing to hear that sound.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The 13-track <em>Hotel Last Resort<\/em>, which follows 2016\u2019s <em>We Can Do Anything<\/em>, includes two left-field cover tunes: a version of Greek rock band Pyx Lax\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m Not Gonna Cry\u201d (featuring Gano\u2019s newly translated lyrics) and a stripped-down adaptation of Irving Berlin\u2019s \u201cGod Bless America\u201d (fleshed out with an improvised free-jazz coda).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think it\u2019s probably the best one we\u2019ve made since [1984\u2019s] <em>Hallowed Ground<\/em>,\u201d Ritchie said of the LP. \u201cWhich is a long time. It\u2019s just a very focused album, the songs all hold together. It\u2019s a classic album, in the sense that people should actually sit down and listen to the whole thing. It\u2019s not too long. It\u2019s short, it\u2019s punchy, it\u2019s solid, it\u2019s to the point, goes a few different directions but it always comes back to the core approach and then it\u2019s over.
