Shawn Mendes<\/a> took a break from Saturday Night Live<\/a><\/em> rehearsals on Thursday to chat with Zane Lowe on Apple Music\u2019s Beats 1\u2019s Best of the Week show. The two talked Mendes\u2019 new song, \u201cIf I Can\u2019t Have You,\u201d<\/a> as well as his newfound experience with acting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019m in a skit, I have no idea what it is but I just got a wig fitted,\u201d Mendes said on his SNL<\/em> rehearsals, for the upcoming episode hosted by Adam Sandler. \u201c[Acting] is the biggest you-have-to-own it thing. As I\u2019m starting to realize I can own this singing thing I think I\u2019ll fall into acting and stuff more, 100%.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mendes also revealed that \u201cIf I Can\u2019t Have You\u201d was originally written for Dua Lipa<\/a>. \u201cI was back in the studio with Teddy Geiger and Nate [Mercreau] and I was playing it on piano and I was like oh my god this would be really cool for Dua Lipa. It was on guitar and I turned it to piano it was right after One Kiss came out. In the voice note \u2013 I\u2019m speaking like I\u2019m gonna send to Dua I\u2019m like, \u2018Okay, Dua, I have this song I have just a chorus we can finish it if you want.’\u201d Later, while playing the song again, Mendes realized he wanted to perform the song himself.<\/p>\n
