{"id":485426,"date":"2019-05-04T11:41:56","date_gmt":"2019-05-04T17:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=831311"},"modified":"2019-05-04T11:41:56","modified_gmt":"2019-05-04T17:41:56","slug":"watch-reggae-legend-ken-boothes-rare-u-s-appearance-for-new-doc-inna-de-yard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/watch-reggae-legend-ken-boothes-rare-u-s-appearance-for-new-doc-inna-de-yard\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Reggae Legend Ken Boothe\u2019s Rare U.S. Appearance for New Doc \u2018Inna de Yard\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/GettyImages-1145964295.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Few voices in music are as soulful and honeyed as Ken Boothe, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/reggae\/\" id=\"auto-tag_reggae\" data-tag=\"reggae\">reggae<\/a> legend whose God-level fame in his home country is showcased in the new documentary&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/innadeyardmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Inna de Yard<\/a>.<\/em> The film, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tribecafilm.com\/filmguide\/inna-de-yard-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">premiered earlier this week at the Tribeca Film Festival<\/a>, highlights both the past and present of reggae veterans like Boothe, Winston McAnuff, Kiddus I, Cedric Myton of the Congos and Bob Marley and the Wailers\u2019 vocalist Judy Mowatt as they record acoustic versions of some of their most celebrated songs for a new album.<\/p>\n<p>Ostensibly a film about the album, director Peter Webber\u2019s doc doubles as a thorough and candid history of the genre and its pioneers, as they reminisce about the fortunes (and misfortunes) of being a reggae musician in the 1970s. \u201cSome countries have diamonds. Some countries have oil,\u201d reggae bassist Worm says in the film. \u201cWe have reggae music.\u201d Webber infuses the film with detours into the sometime-violent history of the country and how it\u2019s affected the featured musicians, though the true highlights are seeing stars like the religion-minded falsetto of Myton and smooth soul of Boothe, both in their early 70s, still transfix and mystify an audience.<\/p>\n<p>Following the film\u2019s premiere earlier this week in New York, Boothe appeared alongside his band for an hour-long, career-spanning set of some of his biggest hits, including \u201cArtibella,\u201d \u201cCrying Over You,\u201d \u201cSilver Words,\u201d \u201cWhen I Fall in Love\u201d and his signature cover of Bread\u2019s 1972 hit \u201cEverything I Own.\u201d His career hopped from ska to rocksteady to reggae, though tonight\u2019s set was heavy for his best-known songs of romance and yearning.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G5h9Xg7UCjQ?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Age has barely slowed down the Jamaican crooner, as the nattily clad singer danced around the stage, doing 360s and displaying a master command of the crowd honed by more than 50 years of live performances.
