Scott-Heron\u2019s father, Giles, left his son when he was an infant to become a professional soccer player and the first black player for Scottish club Glasgow Celtic FC. For 25 years, the two didn\u2019t speak \u2014 Scott-Heron sings about their meeting on 1977\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HtbKZDT5EuI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cHello Sunday! Hello Road!\u201d<\/a> \u2014 but Scott-Heron never forgot his roots. (Exhibit A: His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4QiA9Y2Q9_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1983 performance at Jamaica\u2019s Reggae Sunsplash<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In 1971, Scott-Heron released \u201cHome Is Where the Hatred Is,\u201d a standout track on his first studio album, <em>Pieces of a Man,<\/em> about the perils of drug addiction. \u201cA junkie walking through the twilight, I\u2019m on my way home,\u201d Scott-Heron sings. \u201cI left three days ago but no one seems to know I\u2019m gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nSpBs1ghyoo?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Washington D.C. reggae band the Archives paid tribute to what would have been Scott-Heron\u2019s 70th birthday last month with their own gorgeous take on \u201cHatred.\u201d The first release off new label Montserrat House, founded by Eric Hilton of veteran electronic duo Thievery Corporation, the cover slows down the charging soul of the original song as featured vocalist Puma Ptah imbues the cover with equal amounts poignancy and fire.<\/p>\n<p>Ptah augments the original track with a repeating end phrase, singing, \u201cWhy won\u2019t you stop using drugs?\/That\u2019s easy for you to say.\u201d Modern reggae covers of classic songs can be a crapshoot, but the group\u2019s interpretation of this song balances the faithful with the inventive.<\/p>\n<p>The Archives\u2019 debut album will be released later this year and will feature percussionist Larry MacDonald, a member of Scott-Heron\u2019s band Amnesia Express, and Scott-Heron\u2019s longtime musical collaborator Brian Jackson, among others.
