Earlier this spring, Mac DeMarco<\/a> found himself at the center of an uncharacteristically heated online debate. He\u2019d just announced his fourth studio album, Here Comes the Cowboy<\/em>, and released its lead single, \u201cNobody\u201d \u2014 setting off alarm bells for some fans of Mitski<\/a>, another acclaimed singer-songwriter who released a great album called Be the Cowboy<\/em> last year with a single called, yes, \u201cNobody.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a strange coincidence, to be sure. But DeMarco swears that\u2019s all it was. In fact, he says he wasn\u2019t even aware of Mitski\u2019s similarly titled releases when he named his. \u201cI\u2019m incredibly, incredibly bad at keeping up with anything,\u201d he explains. \u201cI think there were some people who were like, \u2018How is it possible?\u2019 I\u2019m sorry \u2014 I\u2019m really bad at contemporary music.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeMarco brought up this subject on his own during a wide-ranging conversation<\/a> about Here Comes the Cowboy<\/em>, seeking to set the record straight after some accused him of stealing Mitski\u2019s ideas or choosing his title as a trollish joke. \u201cPeople really read into it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Mitski, meanwhile, was unbothered. \u201chaha! I\u2019m 100% sure mac & I just went fishing in the same part of the collective unconscious!\u201d she tweeted<\/a> on the day when this became an indie-rock cause c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, adding, \u201cThanks for the laugh, Mac!\u201d<\/p>\n

DeMarco, too, seems mostly bemused by the whole thing. \u201cThe funniest thing, for me, is that Mitski and me are both musicians, last time I checked,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd nobody actually got to the musical part of any of it!\u201d  (It\u2019s true that the two Cowboy<\/em> records and their \u201cNobody\u201ds don\u2019t sound much alike, or deal with particularly similar themes.)<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s just the internet now,\u201d he adds. \u201cIf I fill somebody\u2019s anger quota for the day, then I can be their stress ball. That\u2019s no problem to me. Whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n

On one point, though, he won\u2019t yield: \u201cEven if someone had told me earlier, I wouldn\u2019t have changed [the title],\u201d he says. \u201cThis is my artwork. \u2018Oh shit, somebody already painted the Mona Lisa! Fuck. Guess I\u2019ll just restart.\u2019\u201d He sighs. \u201cIt\u2019s kinda crazy to me. But it\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
