Eric Clapton<\/a> kicked off his three-night stand at London\u2019s Royal Albert Hall on Monday night with a killer set that included a cover of the late Doris Day<\/a>\u2019s signature song \u201cQue Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)\u201d a rare electric version of \u201cLayla\u201d and, shockingly, a set-closing rendition of Prince<\/a>\u2019s \u201cPurple Rain.\u201d It\u2019s not only the first time that Clapton has played the song in concert, but the first time he\u2019s done a Prince cover of any sort.<\/p>\n

Clapton hasn\u2019t gone on an extended tour since 2013, but he has been doing a handful of gigs every year in major markets. He played five nights at Tokyo\u2019s Nippon Budokan in April that included his first electric \u201cLayla\u201d since 2013<\/a> along with other rarities like \u201cWanna Make Love To You,\u201d \u201cPretending\u201d and \u201cRunning on Faith.\u201d At the Royal Albert Hall show on Monday, he played \u201cTearing Us Apart\u201d for the first time since 2011, \u201cChange the World\u201d for the first time since 2004 and \u201cHoly Mother\u201d for the first time since 2003. All of this follows many years in which his setlist changed minutely from night to night.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear why Clapton decided to play \u201cPurple Rain\u201d at the show, but shortly after Prince died in April 2016, the guitarist wrote a moving tribute to him on Facebook.<\/a> \u201cI\u2019m so sad about the death of Prince,\u201d he wrote. \u201cHe was a true genius, and a huge inspiration for me, in a very real way..In the the eighties, I was out on the road in a massive downward spiral with drink and drugs, I saw Purple Rain<\/em> in a cinema in Canada, I had no idea who he was, it was like a bolt of lightning! In the middle of my depression, and the dreadful state of the music culture at that time it gave me hope, he was like a light in the darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clapton is playing two more shows at the Royal Albert Hall this week before going to Germany and Austria for a quick run of gigs in June. In September, he comes to America for shows in San Francisco, Las Vegas and Phoenix. At the end of the month, he\u2019s headlining the Crossroads Festival at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, where he\u2019ll share the stage with Billy Gibbons, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr, Jeff Beck, Joe Walsh, Los Lobos, Peter Frampton, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill and many others.<\/p>\n
