In the last couple weeks, Mavis Staples<\/a> performed two 80th birthday shows and released her third album in three years \u2013 \u201cI\u2019m not as sharp as I used to be when I\u2019m talking,\u201d Staples told Rolling Stone recently<\/a>, \u201cbut I feel like I\u2019m ready for another 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staples celebrated the release of her new album We Get By<\/em> by stopping by Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/a><\/em> with Ben Harper, who wrote and produced the album, to sing \u201cChange,\u201d a shuffly blues number about rising above injustice. \u201cWhat good is freedom,\u201d Staples howls, \u201cif we haven\u2019t learned how to be free?\u201d \u201cThese songs are delivering such a strong message,\u201d Staples said<\/a> of the new album. \u201cWe truly need to make a change if we want this world to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staples will perform her final 80th birthday celebration in Los Angeles tomorrow night<\/a> (her real birthday is July 10th), joined by Jason Isbell, Joe Henry, Taylor Goldsmith, Phoebe Bridgers and more. She plays a series of festivals this summer, plus major shows like Colorado\u2019s Red Rocks with Norah Jones and a show at Madison Square Garden with Brandi Carlile in September.<\/p>\n
