{"id":486224,"date":"2019-05-23T08:54:51","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T14:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=839051"},"modified":"2019-05-23T08:54:51","modified_gmt":"2019-05-23T14:54:51","slug":"weezer-fall-out-boys-pete-wentz-reflect-on-anxiety-for-mental-health-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/weezer-fall-out-boys-pete-wentz-reflect-on-anxiety-for-mental-health-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Weezer, Fall Out Boy\u2019s Pete Wentz Reflect on Anxiety for Mental Health Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/weezer.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/weezer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_weezer\" data-tag=\"weezer\">Weezer<\/a>\u2019s Scott Shriner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fall-out-boy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fall-out-boy\" data-tag=\"fall-out-boy\">Fall Out Boy<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/pete-wentz\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pete-wentz\" data-tag=\"pete-wentz\">Pete Wentz<\/a> and songwriter-producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/butch-walker\/\" id=\"auto-tag_butch-walker\" data-tag=\"butch-walker\">Butch Walker<\/a> open up about their youthful struggles with anxiety in a new video for the Child Mind Institute\u2019s 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/childmind.org\/myyoungerself\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">#MyYoungerSelf<\/a> social media campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a clip featuring the full band, Shriner reflected on his childhood self as \u201csuper sick, different and weird\u201d \u2014 a kid who \u201chated himself and [was] scared of everything, hid under the bed when it was time to go to school.\u201d But he emphasized the importance of finding a passion and pursuing it: \u201c[Try to] find something that you really enjoy and just work really hard at it and know that you\u2019re not alone and that you\u2019re not always going to feel that way,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I knew then how I would turn out now, I probably could\u2019ve relaxed a little bit \u2026 Find some of the weirdos like you to talk to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band\u2019s frontman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rivers-cuomo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rivers-cuomo\" data-tag=\"rivers-cuomo\">Rivers Cuomo<\/a>, noted the impact meditation has had on his life, and drummer Patrick Wilson emphasized the importance of embracing nature and escaping social media. \u201cI feel it\u2019s important for people to be outside a lot, stop looking at screens,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t eat sugar, get to know the people in your neighborhood, ride a bicycle, go in the woods and do stuff like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In his clip, Wentz addressed the normalcy of cycling through emotional \u201cups and downs\u201d and spoke about \u201cde-stigmatizing\u201d our cultural conversation about mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s super normal \u2026 to be unsure of yourself and feel lonely,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the things I would have told myself 10 years ago or 20 years ago is that it\u2019s alright to feel that anxiety and it\u2019s alright to feel down, but you\u2019ve gotta know that tomorrow might have a different feeling. I think you\u2019re not really alone because people are all feeling that \u2014 feeling great and feeling terrible. Life is a journey, and I think it\u2019s important not to just slap a smile on your face when you\u2019re feeling down \u2026 It\u2019s also important to know that you can reach out to people. Sometimes you start feeling like, \u2018Ah, I\u2019m feeling down, and I\u2019ll just keep it to myself.\u2019 I think it\u2019s important to reach out to your friends. And if you notice one of your friends feeling down and it\u2019s something you can\u2019t handle yourself, you should reach out to someone who can help them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k7QjGJpfyM8?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Walker (Pink, Fall Out Boy, Weezer, Panic! at the Disco) looked back on the \u201canxiety and depression\u201d that came from \u201cgrowing up in a small town and feeling different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was a pretty small town, and it was a lot of people who were scared out of the box of being \u2018normal\u2019 and scared to like things that other people didn\u2019t necessarily like or weren\u2019t into,\u201d he said. \u201cI was not that way. For some reason, I gravitated toward the weird \u2014 I gravitated toward doing things and loving things that a lot of my friends did not. And because of that I got made fun of a lot \u2014 ridiculed, teased, mocked. I got yelled at by a lot of people because I liked rock and roll. There were a lot of people who were too conservative and too scared to pursue anything like that \u2014 maybe just because they were afraid they would fail, I guess. Either way, it made it kinda tough growing up in a town like that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI know I\u2019m not alone,\u201d he continued. \u201cI have a son who is 11 years old, and he\u2019s very different from other kids in his school. He comes home and talks to me all the time about it. I think he\u2019s misunderstood sometimes because he\u2019s got such an incredible imagination and doesn\u2019t want to filter that. I was very much the same way when I was growing up. I guess the bottom line here is I want to tell you, \u2018Don\u2019t be afraid to be different. Don\u2019t be afraid to challenge yourself.\u2019 If you find yourself gravitating toward something you love that other people may not necessarily like around you, don\u2019t worry about it.
