{"id":486979,"date":"2019-06-13T09:00:17","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T15:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=847417"},"modified":"2019-06-13T09:00:17","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T15:00:17","slug":"hear-charles-bradley-sharon-jones-posthumous-performances-on-daptones-hey-brother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/hear-charles-bradley-sharon-jones-posthumous-performances-on-daptones-hey-brother\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones\u2019 Posthumous Performances on Daptone\u2019s \u2018Hey Brother\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/daptone-100th-record.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Late Daptone greats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sharon-jones\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sharon-jones\" data-tag=\"sharon-jones\">Sharon Jones<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/charles-bradley\/\" id=\"auto-tag_charles-bradley\" data-tag=\"charles-bradley\">Charles Bradley<\/a> anchor a new all-star rendition of \u201cHey Brother (Do Unto Others),\u201d the A-side to the label\u2019s upcoming 100th 45rpm record, out June 28th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Along with featuring posthumous performances from Jones and Bradley \u2014 who died in 2016 and 2017, respectively \u2014 the cover also honors two other late Daptone artists, Dan Klein of the Frightnrs (who wrote \u201cHey Brother\u201d) and organist\/bandleader Cliff Driver. \u201cHey Brother\u201d originally appeared on the Frightnrs 2016 album, <em>Nothing More to Say<\/em>, which was released after Klein\u2019s death from ALS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The surviving members of the Frightnrs also contributed to the new version of the song, a slinky soul number that features lyrics bursting with hope and righteousness. The song incorporates vocal performances Jones and Bradley recorded prior to their deaths, as well as other Daptone artists like Saun and Starr, James Hunter, Naomi Shelton, Duke Amayo and Lee Fields, plus members of the Dap-Kings and the Menahan Street Band.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The B-side of Daptone\u2019s 100th 45, \u201cSoul Fugue,\u201d was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/daptone-100th-45-rpm-release-hear-soul-fugue-b-side-838569\/\">released in May<\/a>. The song was recorded by the 100 Knights Orchestra, an outfit comprising every horn player that\u2019s ever worked with Daptone, including past and current members of Dap-Kings, Antibalas, the Budos Band, the Menahan Street Band, the Extraordinaires, the Soul Providers and the Daktaris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Daphne\u2019s 100th 45 will be available as a standard black vinyl seven-inch, as well as a limited edition die-cut picture disc featuring the label\u2019s globe logo.
