The synth pop duo, composed of Bogot\u00e1-born Juli Ronderos and Nico Losada, quickly turned heads in Brooklyn\u2019s indie scene for their intricate, bookish synth pop when they debuted as Il Abanico. In recent years, Ronderos and Losada have plunged into a new sonic universe, dabbling in genres like dancehall and reggae and drawing inspiration from the deep musical traditions of Colombia\u2019s Caribbean coast \u2013 as well as Jamaican innovators like Assassin and Lee \u201cScratch\u201d Perry, both of whom have collaborated with the duo in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cmu\u00e9velo\u201d follows in this vein, blending pitch-shifted, chopped-up vocal samples, a skittering<\/span> <em><span>dembow<\/span><\/em> <span>riddim, and eyelash-batting lyrics that go down like a glass of sparkling ros\u00e9. The bilingual song also winks to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-latin-lists\/50-greatest-latin-pop-songs-695776\/el-general-tu-pum-pum-1991-695897\/\"><span>El General<\/span><\/a><span>, the godfather of<\/span> <em><span>reggae en espa\u00f1ol<\/span><\/em> <span>who helped lay the groundwork for reggaeton\u2019s pop explosion with hits like \u201cTu Pum Pum\u201d and \u201cMu\u00e9velo, Mu\u00e9velo,\u201d some of the first Spanish-language dancehall tracks to appear on U.S. radio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a statement, Salt Cathedral says the song captures the future of Latinx pop. \u201cTo us, \u2018mu\u00e9velo\u2019 is the new sound of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/latin\/\" id=\"auto-tag_latin\" data-tag=\"latin\">Latin<\/a> America.
