It\u2019s one you never forget, even after you\u2019ve written \u201cUptown Funk\u201d and \u201cShallow.\u201d Last night on <em>The Late Show,<\/em> the Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter-producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mark-ronson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mark-ronson\" data-tag=\"mark-ronson\">Mark Ronson<\/a> reminisced about his first job in the \u201cbusiness\u201d: researching the music charts page for <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. The kicker? He was 12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was such a big music nerd growing up,\u201d Ronson told Colbert. \u201cI would read <em>Billboard<\/em> and liner notes from the age of eight.\u201d In 1989, after incessantly begging family friend and <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> founder Jann Wenner for a job, Ronson was granted an internship. \u201cI was a 12-year-old whose voice hadn\u2019t broke, manning the phones,\u201d Ronson said with a laugh. He balanced work with prepping for his bar mitzvah. \u201cI would take a break and go study my haftarah portion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Ronson\u2019s tasks was configuring the charts page. Because this was the pre-Internet age, the data was manually collected by calling individual record stores and finding out what albums sold the most copies. \u201cWait,\u201d interrupted Colbert. \u201c<em>You<\/em> were determining what the Number One album in America was \u2026 at age 12?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ronson said the art department thought he was pranking them when he reported that the <em>Batman<\/em> soundtrack was the best-selling album in America. Indeed, it was. For six consecutive weeks, the duration of a summer internship, we were one nation under <em>Batman.<\/em> Even then, Ronson was hustling behind-the-scenes of the biggest songs of our time.
