Like many rising pop stars in the YouTube generation, Chelsea Cutler<\/a> said cover songs played a fundamental role in her life. \u201cThe very first thing I did on LogicPro, learning how to produce, was a ton of covers,\u201d the 22-year-old pop singer said on last week\u2019s Spotify<\/a> Under Cover podcast. \u201cI did an Odesza cover of \u2018Say My Name\u2019 and I mashed it up with \u2018Sway\u2019 by Anna of the North. That was the first thing that got discovered by anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cutler discussed her personal attachments to artists of songs she\u2019s covered, which led to her unique rendition of Justin Timberlake<\/a>\u2019s \u201cSummer Love.\u201d She recalled hearing the song for the first time as a child in Connecticut, singing it in her Jeep on the beach. \u201cI think you attach songs so tightly to the first time you heard it,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd you\u2019ll never be able to shake that, for better or for worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Timberlake\u2019s \u201cSummer Love\u201d became one of those anthems that\u2019s stuck with her over the years, so she mapped out how to do it justice. \u201cI think the first major adjustment we made was slowing it down,\u201d she said. \u201cI made it simpler in a lot of places.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it came to Timberlake\u2019s lyrics, she discovered they were less innocent than her nine-year-old self once thought. \u201cIt\u2019s funny because the lyrics are actually super-swaggy and super-sexy,\u201d Cutler said. \u201cI had been hearing it all this time, and then finally when I was singing it and I was internalizing it, I was like, \u2018Oooh JT! Okay!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
