The song appears on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-the-soul-rap-revelation-of-jamila-woods-legacy-legacy-832954\/\"><em>Legacy! Legacy!<\/em><\/a>, which the soulful R&amp;B singer and poet released in May.<\/p>\n<p>The song is inspired by James Baldwin\u2019s powerful \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/magazine\/letter-nephew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A Letter to My Nephew<\/a>,\u201d and its Vincent Martell-directed visual is set in what looks like an abandoned school on Chicago\u2019s South Side, but as Woods described it in a statement, it\u2019s \u201clike Hogwarts, but Black.\u201d As three students approach the school, they magically move through an outside wall and are transported into a beautiful space, where everyone is engrossed in the day\u2019s teachings, handclaps turn into fireworks and caring camaraderie is found throughout.<\/p>\n<p>Woods sings about racism, gentrification and other injustices. \u201cWe don\u2019t go out\/Can\u2019t wish us away,\u201d she soulfully sings on the chorus, which is buoyed by horn melodies. \u201cWe been burning brighter every day\/You don\u2019t know a thing about our story, tell it wrong all the time\/Don\u2019t know a thing about our glory, wanna steal my baby\u2019s shine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stirring video ends with students discussing what their dream school would entail, which includes the need for an updated library (one student explains her school does not have one), the consideration of feelings and emotions in addition to learning and the need to teach at individual student\u2019s levels while pushing them to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo outsiders, the school appears to be abandoned \u2014 one of 50 public schools closed under Mayor Emmanuel\u2019s watch in 2013,\u201d she explains in a statement about the video. \u201cHowever, for Black people in the neighborhood this space is a gem, an oasis of Black learning and radical education for young people.
