Miley Cyrus<\/a> made a surprise appearance at the 2019 Video Music Awards to perform her heartbreaking new song \u201cSlide Away.\u201d<\/a> The track was released earlier this month in the wake of her separation from husband Liam Hemsworth.<\/p>\n

After being introduced by Lizzo, Cyrus appeared onstage in a black dress accompanied by a string quartet. \u201cOnce upon a time, it was paradise,\u201d she laments in the opening verse. \u201cOnce upon a time, I was paralyzed.\u201d Her vocals soar through octaves, overcoming sadness as she belts \u201cSo won\u2019t you slide away\u201d repeatedly at the end.<\/p>\n

Cyrus and Hemsworth had been off-and-on for 10 years; Hemsworth has since filed for divorce. \u201cI can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating,\u201d Cyrus wrote in a series of tweets<\/a> last week. \u201cI\u2019ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cyrus\u2019 last studio album was 2017\u2019s country-pop Younger Now<\/em>. She returned this June with the EP She Is Coming<\/em>, the first of three six-song EPs Cyrus announced that would comprise a full album titled She Is Miley Cyrus<\/em>. She has yet to announce release dates, though the other EPs will be titled She Is Here<\/em> and She Is Everything<\/em>. The She Is Coming<\/em> single \u201cMother\u2019s Daughter\u201d is up for two awards tonight, including Best Power Anthem and Song of the Summer.<\/p>\n
