Seminal hip-hop<\/a> duo Gang Starr<\/a> return with new song \u201cFamily and Loyalty\u201d featuring J. Cole. The track is the group\u2019s first new music in 16 years and features the late Guru<\/a>, who died in 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis record means so much to me,\u201d DJ Premier<\/a> said in a statement. \u201d It\u2019s a continuation of what I never wanted to end. It\u2019s a very foreign place for me and very emotional. I get happy, sad, excited; my feelings are kind of all over the place. But predominantly, just very happy to be making music with Guru again.\u201d<\/p>\n

On \u201cFamily and Loyalty,\u201d the artists explore legacy and lasting resonance, which are in turn prescient and poignant themes particularly in light of Guru\u2019s death. \u201cDiamonds are forever, like family and loyalty, or real rap songs like \u2018C.R.E.A.M.\u2019 or \u2018My Melody,’\u201d Guru raps on the hook, delivering his trademark silky flow over DJ Premier\u2019s contemplative, laser-sharp scratching, cuts and jazzy and piano-tipped production. \u201cDiamonds are forever like my infinite thought, like respect in the hood that can\u2019t be bought\/Word up\/Diamonds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cole\u2019s vocals briefly join Guru\u2019s as they pass off on their verses. \u201cJ. Cole, who\u2019d a thought you woulda been rhyming with ghosts?\/Guru flows forever like a diamond that most\/Could never afford the precious jewels,\u201d he raps. \u201cThat\u2019s precisely why I\u2019m blessing you with clear-cut messages\/I\u2019m destined to invest in urban sections where depression rules\/I hope to hear the destitute before I leave this vestibule.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premier felt the collaboration was a good fit. \u201cWhen it comes to this generation of emcees, ones that are lyrically on the level that Guru was on and someone that he would want to work with; Cole is that guy,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cWhen Cole heard the record he got the chills and knew it was a classic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFamily and Loyalty,\u201d which was released and available at midnight<\/a> on Thursday, follows Gang Starr\u2019s last project together, 2003\u2019s The Ownerz<\/em>, though they individually continued to release material prior to and after that release.<\/p>\n
