Over a brooding stomp of drums, cut with synths and a prickly guitar, the duo sing in soft harmony, \u201cThe thing my mother told me was that everyone would love me\/But in the dark I feel so lonely, I\u2019m numb\/She said it with so much conviction, but I feel like something\u2019s missing, again\/Oh, I don\u2019t love me at all, I don\u2019t love me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a statement, Sara said of the song\u2019s origins, \u201cOur mother tells a story about watching the 1980s television show <em>Punky Brewster<\/em> with us when we were four years old. The episode\u2019s morality tale focused on lying, and near the end of the show, she describes one of us climbing onto her back, sobbing into her neck and confessing a lie we\u2019d told her earlier in the day. At 15, we started telling lies again, and we absolved ourselves constantly in the lyrics of our songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">All the songs on <em>Hey, I\u2019m Just Like You<\/em> come from Tegan and Sara\u2019s teenage years, and the indie pop duo decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/tegan-and-sara-new-album-hey-im-just-like-you-856935\/\">re-record them after discovering<\/a> a trove of old cassette tapes while working on their upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/tegan-and-sara-new-memoir-high-school-767509\/\">memoir, <em>High School<\/em><\/a> (out September 24th).
