It\u2019s the kind of thing she might do on any given day (\u201cit felt like I was living in a David Lynch film, and that\u2019s kind of all I want in life\u201d), but she was also paying quiet tribute to the producer of that 1980 album, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ric-ocasek\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ric-ocasek\" data-tag=\"ric-ocasek\">Ric Ocasek<\/a>. Ocasek died at the age of 75 last Sunday of heart disease, according to the New York City medical examiner\u2019s office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Kesha was a teenager, her musical tastes were edgy and broad \u2013 she loved the Stooges and got into Captain Beefheart \u2013 but she also had a growing \u201caffinity for pop music.\u201d \u201cRic Ocasek, along with the Beach Boys, had a huge influence on me accepting that pop music is fucking cool,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m obsessed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-cars\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-cars\" data-tag=\"the-cars\">the Cars<\/a>, and the fact that he worked with a band like Suicide, and had such amazing pop instincts, especially melodically \u2013 it\u2019s like, see? Pop music is cool!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When she was around 16, Kesha got to work with Ocasek, visiting his home. \u201cIt was the first time I\u2019d ever been in someone\u2019s house in New York City that had an elevator <em>in the house<\/em>,\u201d she says. \u201cI was like, \u2018Damn, this guy\u2019s a pimp.\u2019 And I remember his beautiful wife. H<\/span><span>e was obviously, like, a strange genius. But he was the nicest guy ever. And every idea was worth exploring. He didn\u2019t make me feel stupid or young or inexperienced for one second. Everything was worth exploring with him and I loved that all creativity was good. Even if it was not really a very good idea he was open to trying to explore it with me, and he was just so kind because it was way before I had a song on the radio and he took the time to work with me, when i was just a little pissant in the industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kesha and her mom, Pebe Sebert, worked on an early version of a song that ended up on her debut album, \u201cStephen,\u201d with Ocasek, along with a unreleased track called \u201cParty Jam.\u201d She\u2019d love to honor Ocasek by putting the latter song out, but she doesn\u2019t have the recording handy. \u201cI don\u2019t know where the fuck it would be,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m going to look for it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/kesha-ric-ocasek-influence-887980\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kesha spent Monday morning riding her bike and listening to the second album by Suicide, the wildly influential synth-punk duo.
