Billy Joel<\/a>\u2019s catalog is populated with vivid storylines and memorable characters\u2014enough, apparently, to fuel a TV series. MGM is partnering with Universal Music Publishing Group to develop a scripted anthology series (or \u201carc-thology\u201d) based around the songwriter\u2019s music, according to the Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Scenes From an Italian Restaurant<\/em> is named after Joel\u2019s 1977 track of the same name, which he told Stephen Colbert ranked as one of his five best<\/a>. Each episode of the project will be built around his famous lyrics, including characters like the Stranger, the Piano Man, Mamma Leone and Sgt. O\u2019Leary. Joel worked his music team to revamp the songs with new arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kevin Fox (Law & Order: SVU<\/em>) is creating and executive-producing the show alongside Joel and the songwriter\u2019s longtime producing partner, Steve Cohen (who worked on the 2017 documentary Billy Joel: New York State of Mind<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Steve Stark, MGM TV\u2019s president of development and production, told the Hollywood Reporter<\/em> that the series will \u201cfocus less on Billy\u2019s life and more on the stories inside his catalog of classic songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That creative focus falls in line with Joel\u2019s recent comments. Despite the popularity of rock-star biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em><\/a> and Rocketman<\/em><\/a>, the singer told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> in May that he \u201c[doesn\u2019t] have enough objectivity\u201d to do one.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was gonna write an autobiography at one time \u2014 and I did,\u201d he said. \u201cThere wasn\u2019t enough sex, drugs and rock & roll in it for the publisher, so I gave the advance money back. I said, \u2018Fuck it, that\u2019s me.\u2019 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019m interesting enough to make a movie out of. I lived my life. I don\u2019t want to be redundant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
