I wholeheartedly believe Frank can ascertain when he is being lied to, or when he feels the need to lie, but in a cover story for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmagazine.com\/story\/frank-ocean-cover-story-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>W Magazine<\/em><\/a> the reclusive singer drops hints about his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/frank-ocean-perfects-avant-garde-soul-on-poetic-stripped-down-blonde-252338\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Blonde<\/em><\/a> follow-up. For the time being it is influenced by \u201cDetroit, Chicago, techno, house, French electronic\u201d club music, but, more interestingly, Ocean is also convinced he\u2019ll be lying more on the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed for a very long time that there was strength in vulnerability, and I really don\u2019t believe that anymore,\u201d Ocean begins. \u201c\u2018Strength\u2019 and \u2018vulnerability\u2019 sound opposite as words. And so to combine them sounds wise, but I don\u2019t know if it is wise. It\u2019s just this realization that hit me: \u2018Oh, right, it\u2019s a choice whether you will be truthful or a liar.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe expectation for artists to be vulnerable and truthful is a lot, you know,\u201d Frank continues. \u201cwhen it\u2019s no longer a choice. Like, in order for me to satisfy expectations, there needs to be an outpouring of my heart or my experiences in a very truthful, vulnerable way. I\u2019m more interested in lies than that. Like, give me a full motion-picture fantasy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Frank is asked if he meant to describe a \u201cfantasy\u201d instead of a lie, the mercurial musician merely answers: \u201cThey\u2019re the same thing.\u201d By the end of the interview, it isn\u2019t clear if Frank thinks that all fantasy storytelling is the same as lying, or if Frank merely considers his fantasy writing a lie compared to his typical, soul-baring lyrics.
