On Tuesday at midnight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/chromatics\/\" id=\"auto-tag_chromatics\" data-tag=\"chromatics\">Chromatics<\/a> unveiled <em>Closer to Grey<\/em>, the follow-up to 2012\u2019s much-anticipated <em>Kill for Love<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Closer to Grey<\/em> comes after seven years of delayed releases and fraught circumstances for the band. Chromatics initially announced in December 2014 that their <em>Kill for Love<\/em> follow-up would be titled&nbsp;<em>Dear Tommy<\/em>&nbsp;and would be released around Valentine\u2019s Day. The band subsequently shared the singles \u201cShadow,\u201d \u201cIn Films,\u201d \u201cJust Like You, \u201cI Can Never Be Myself When You\u2019re Around\u201d and \u201cDear Tommy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, though, Chromatics manager Alexis Rivera revealed that producer Johnny Jewel had <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/73276-johnny-jewel-destroyed-every-copy-of-chromatics-dear-tommy-after-near-death-experience\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">destroyed all physical copies of the album<\/a> in January 2016, following a near-death experience while swimming in Hawaii. A re-recorded version of the album was reported as \u201ccloser to completion.\u201d In May 2018, Chromatics released the single \u201cBlack Walls\u201d and announced that <em>Dear Tommy<\/em> would be out that fall, but the project was delayed again.<\/p>\n<p><em>Closer to Grey<\/em> appears to be an entirely different record from <em>Dear Tommy<\/em>, bearing no resemblance to the previously released singles. Still, it\u2019s had a long gestation period of its own; <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/57759-johnny-jewel-shares-31-minute-instrumental-the-other-side-of-midnight-unreleased-chromatics-song\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an early version of the title track<\/a> was released back in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><em>Closer to Grey<\/em> is billed as Chromatics\u2019 seventh album (the Roman numeral VII is featured on the cover), and since&nbsp;<em>Kill for Love<\/em> was their fifth, it\u2019s possible that&nbsp;the band may one day release a completed&nbsp;<em>Dear Tommy<\/em>.
