The Queen of Soul will be portrayed by singer, songwriter and actress Cynthia Erivo, who also plays the titular role in 2019\u2019s <em>Harriet<\/em>. She also won a Tony and Grammy award for her work in <em>The Color Purple<\/em> revival on Broadway.<\/p>\n<p><em>Genius: Aretha<\/em> is billed as a definitive, authorized account of Franklin\u2019s life. The series will feature several of Franklin\u2019s hits, including \u201cI Never Loved a Man (the Way I Love You),\u201d \u201cChain of Fools,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t Play That Song (You Lied)\u201d and \u201cBaby I Love You.\u201d It will also include footage of Franklin performing \u201cFreeway of Love,\u201d \u201cI Knew You Were Waiting (for Me)\u201d and \u201cSisters Are Doin\u2019 it for Themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAretha Franklin has been a source of inspiration for me since I was a little girl,\u201d Erivo, who will also perform songs from Franklin\u2019s catalog during the series, said in a statement. \u201cHer strength, passion and soul are evident in her everlasting legacy, not only as a transcendent artist, but as a humanitarian and civil rights icon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have the opportunity to bring her legacy to life and show the fullness of her being, her humanity and brilliance is an honor,\u201d she continued. \u201cWhat I know and have learned about what my voice, as an artist, can do and the power it has been highly influenced by Franklin.
