Michael Stipe<\/a> has released his new song \u201cYour Capricious Soul,\u201d the singer\u2019s first release since the breakup of R.E.M. in 2011.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took a long break from music, and I wanted to jump back in,\u201d Stipe said in a statement. \u201cI love \u2018Your Capricious Soul\u2019 \u2013 it\u2019s my first solo work. I want to add my voice to this exciting shift in consciousness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour Capricious Soul\u201d \u2013 which Stipe has performed live, including its debut<\/a> prior to a Patti Smith concert in New York in May 2019 \u2013 finds him singing atop a bed of synths and subtle programmed beats; the three-minute studio version closely mirrors that previously unveiled live rendition.<\/p>\n

The song is available to download now exclusively through Stipe\u2019s website<\/a>, with proceeds from the 77-cent download over the next 365 days benefitting Extinction Rebellion<\/a> \u201cto help aid their work of non-violent protest of government inaction to the climate emergency.\u201d The song\u2019s release is tied to the \u201cInternational Rebellion\u201d climate justice protest on October 7th.<\/p>\n

\u201cExtinction Rebellion gave me the incentive to push the release and not wait. Our relationship to the environment has been a lifelong concern, and I now feel hopeful\u2014optimistic, even,\u201d Stipe continued. \u201cI believe we can bring the kind of change needed to improve our beautiful planet earth, our standing and our place on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 77-cent download is accompanied by a master-quality audio version of \u201cYour Capricious Soul,\u201d a Sam Taylor-Johnson-directed video, Stipe\u2019s lyric document, a print-ready poster, stencil and an animated flip-book portrait; the song is also being offered as a free download without all that bonus material.<\/p>\n

While Stipe has contributed to projects ranging from Rain Phoenix\u2019s new music<\/a> to a tribute album to a dead cat<\/a>, \u201cYour Capricious Soul\u201d marks his first work at a solo artist.<\/p>\n
