{"id":491028,"date":"2019-10-08T10:37:42","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T16:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=896161"},"modified":"2019-10-08T10:37:42","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T16:37:42","slug":"members-of-fleet-foxes-the-shins-performed-suite-judy-blue-eyes-with-judy-collins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/members-of-fleet-foxes-the-shins-performed-suite-judy-blue-eyes-with-judy-collins\/","title":{"rendered":"Members of Fleet Foxes, The Shins Performed \u2018Suite: Judy Blue Eyes\u2019 With Judy Collins"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/suite-judy-blue-eyes-newport.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/dolly-parton-brandi-carlile-highwomen-newport-folk-festival-2019-864399\/\">Dolly Parton\u2019s surprise appearance<\/a> may have grabbed most of the headlines during this past summer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/newport-folk-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_newport-folk-festival\" data-tag=\"newport-folk-festival\">Newport Folk Festival<\/a>, but one of the weekend\u2019s most exciting moments came during the Sunday evening closing set when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fleet-foxes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fleet-foxes\" data-tag=\"fleet-foxes\">Fleet Foxes<\/a>\u2019 Robin Pecknold, the Shins\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/james-mercer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_james-mercer\" data-tag=\"james-mercer\">James Mercer<\/a> and Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats) offered a note-by-note rendition of \u201cSuite: Judy Blue Eyes,\u201d Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash\u2019s 1969 classic.<\/p>\n<p>With an all-star backing band that included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/janet-weiss\/\" id=\"auto-tag_janet-weiss\" data-tag=\"janet-weiss\">Janet Weiss<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jason-isbell\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jason-isbell\" data-tag=\"jason-isbell\">Jason Isbell<\/a>, Benmont Tench, John Stirratt and Chris Funk, the trio worked their way through the song\u2019s intricate three-part harmonies and various musical changes before, two-thirds of the way through, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/judy-collins\/\" id=\"auto-tag_judy-collins\" data-tag=\"judy-collins\">Judy Collins<\/a>, the song\u2019s inspiration, joined them onstage, adding vocals and guitar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/stephen-stills\/\" id=\"auto-tag_stephen-stills\" data-tag=\"stephen-stills\">Stephen Stills<\/a> wrote \u201cSuite: Judy Blue Eyes\u201d for Collins as their relationship was falling apart in the late Sixties. \u201cThe first time he sang that to me, I said, \u2018You know, it\u2019s a beautiful song, but it\u2019s not going to get me back,&#8217;\u201d Collins told the crowd after the performance.<\/p>\n<p>Collins was appearing at the festival as part of its 60th anniversary.
