Two days after Phil Collins<\/a> performed \u201cIn the Air Tonight\u201d at Madison Square Garden<\/a>, indie singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus<\/a> unveiled her own cover of the 1981 classic. The song will be featured on 2019<\/em>, Dacus\u2019 upcoming holiday-themed EP out November 8 via Matador Records. The chilling Collins cover comes just in time for Halloween.<\/p>\n

Dacus puts a goth-noir spin on the track, her hollow vocals backed by gated reverb and haunted synths as she sings, \u201cWell the hurt doesn\u2019t show, but the pain still grows\/It\u2019s no stranger to you and me,\u201d before the intense drum break. \u201cPerhaps the best eerie bop of all time, and certainly the best drum fill,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Dacus also addressed the urban legend<\/a> that has surrounded the song for decades in that same statement. The story changes a bit with each telling, but it usually involves Collins watching a man refuse to help another man who was drowning. \u201cThe image in the first verse is so unsettling, watching someone watch someone drown without moving to save them,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople have wondered if this is something Phil Collins really witnessed, but the song is actually just a manifestation of his anger and frustration about his divorce. It\u2019s tense, dark, and so much fun, as a good Halloween should be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collins himself has been baffled by the song\u2019s misinterpretation for nearly 40 years and has debunked the theory in several interviews, claiming that it was truly about his bitter divorce after his wife \u201chad a go with the decorator.\u201d \u201cNobody knew what it was about, and I kind of liked the mystery,\u201d he told Rolling Stone<\/em> in 2016. \u201cI\u2019m happy to be defined by that. If \u2018Groovy Kind of Love\u2019 defined me, that would be terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dacus\u2019 cover of \u201cIn the Air Tonight\u201d follows her sparkling take on \u201cDancing in the Dark\u201d<\/a> in honor of Bruce Springsteen\u2019s 70th birthday. She previously released a cover of Edith Piaf\u2019s \u201cLa Vie En Rose\u201d<\/a> in honor of Valentine\u2019s Day, \u201cMy Mother & I\u201d<\/a> for Mother\u2019s Day and \u201cForever Half Mast\u201d<\/a> for Fourth of July.<\/p>\n

Last month, Dacus opened for Mitski\u2019s farewell shows<\/a> in New York\u2019s Central Park. She\u2019s scheduled to tour throughout the rest of the year, making stops in major cities that include Seattle\u2019s Neuomo\u2019s on October 22nd and New York\u2019s Webster Hall on December 5th. She\u2019ll perform at 30A Songwriters Festival in South Walton, Florida from January 17th to the 19th.<\/p>\n
