{"id":491253,"date":"2019-10-14T20:51:59","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T02:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=899153"},"modified":"2019-10-14T20:51:59","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T02:51:59","slug":"beach-slang-recruit-the-replacements-tommy-stinson-for-new-lp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kqzr\/music-news\/beach-slang-recruit-the-replacements-tommy-stinson-for-new-lp\/","title":{"rendered":"Beach Slang Recruit the Replacements\u2019 Tommy Stinson for New LP"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/unnamed.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/beach-slang\/\" id=\"auto-tag_beach-slang\" data-tag=\"beach-slang\">Beach Slang<\/a> recruited former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson for their new LP, <em>The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City<\/em>, out January 10th via Bridge Nine Records. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The indie rock band previewed the album with thunderous lead single \u201cBam Rang Rang,\u201d a torrent of power chord fuzz, bent-note guitar leads and the ragged snarl of frontman James Alex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The track opens in glam-punk territory; after a false ending ushers in a wall of feedback, Alex leads the band through a cowbell-heavy hard rock section that conjures a hybrid of Mountain\u2019s \u201cMississippi Queen\u201d and Deep Purple\u2019s \u201cSmoke on the Water.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BkiYwpPciEs?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerrang.com\/the-news\/beach-slang-the-replacements-announce-new-album-release-fast-and-loose-first-single\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Kerrang<\/em><\/a> interview, Alex detailed the origins of the song\u2019s split structure. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was listening to an interview with Paul Westerberg about the way he went at writing songs for a particular record\u2009\u2014\u2009<em>Come Feel Me Tremble<\/em> maybe? I don\u2019t know,\u201d he said of the first half. \u201cMy head loses stuff easily. But, yeah, he called the way he\u2019d hit his guitar as \u2018just going bam, rang, rang.\u2019 I heard that, and it shot me good. I knew, straight away, I wanted to write a real dirty burner and call it \u2018Bam Rang Rang,\u2019 something that made you want to buy a motorcycle, smoke a cigarette and land a hangover.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of the final section, he noted, \u201cI heard someone say I wasn\u2019t a very good guitar player and I wanted to prove them wrong. I mean, they\u2019re right, but I figured I\u2019d just play loud enough to let them know they weren\u2019t. There\u2019s something about a sleazy riff on a ratty guitar that makes everything alright. So, I smashed Angus Young into Marc Bolan and got a great, big, messy chunk of glam and swagger.
