Alanis Morissette<\/a>\u2019s breakthrough album, Jagged Little Pill<\/a><\/em><\/a>, is taking Broadway<\/a> for the first time in November \u2014 and in the form of a live musical adaptation.<\/p>\n

In a new teaser video, cast members Celia Rose Gooding and Antonio Cipriano give Morissette\u2019s 1996 hit, \u201cHead Over Feet\u201d a tender revamp. Shot in the same intimate style as her original music video, the two transform Morissette\u2019s swooning monologue into a dynamic interplay between two young souls, teetering precariously on the edge of falling in love.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about feeling this resistance to falling for someone,\u201d Morissette tells Rolling Stone<\/em> over the phone. \u201cSome people enter relationships a little more apprehensive than others. Watching them both interact like, \u2018I really want this but I\u2019m terrified!\u2019 That\u2019s what the song\u2019s about.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musical tells not the story of Morissette\u2019s life, but of the Healys: a fictional suburban family who struggle to shelter their adoptive daughter, and themselves, from an increasingly complex outside world. Morissette enlisted Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody<\/a> to write the book for Jagged Little Pill, <\/em>using only the songs as her guide; she also recruited director Diane Paulus (Waitress<\/em>, Pippin<\/em>), composer Tom Kitt (American Idiot<\/em>, Next to Normal<\/em>) and Beyonc\u00e9 collaborator Sidi Larbi Cherkaou for choreography.<\/p>\n

\u201cThankfully it\u2019s stood the test of time, I think because it\u2019s both personal and talking about humanity and our existence,\u201d says Morissette. \u201cIt\u2019s a humanity conversation, not an era-specific one \u2026 \u2018Mary Jane,\u2019 for example, is performed by a man. Every time I sit in the audience, I\u2019m actually hearing these songs for the first time in a way, through different voices, different genders, different humans. When I perform the songs live now, I hear them all \u2014 every different harmonic interpretation \u2014 and I\u2019m like, \u2018Damn you, Tom Kitt!’\u201d<\/p>\n

Morissette professes that she has cried during every rehearsal. \u201cDiablo and I have a running joke about it,\u201d she says. \u201cAt any rehearsal, it\u2019s just common knowledge that Alanis is gonna be sobbing. But for me, my whole approach to survival has been to go as deeply as I can, and then laughing at it all. If I\u2019m not laughing, I\u2019m crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Diablo Cody, says Morissette, she found the \u201cperfect balance of intellectualism, emotional intelligence and profound humor.\u201d And, she adds, \u201cWe\u2019re both messes.\u201d<\/p>\n
